CHARLES INDUSTRIES APPOINTS NATIONAL SALES DIRECTOR FOR CATV SALES; NAMES NEW CATV MANUFACTURERS' REPRESENTATIVE FIRMS

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL (March 19, 2009) — Charles Industries, Ltd., a leading provider of outside plant innovations for communications service providers, has named Timothy J. O'Brien as the National Sales Director of its new CATV/Broadband sales team. O'Brien will manage Charles' CATV sales team efforts to launch its newly released lines of non-metallic pedestals and housings to CATV providers and Multiple Service Operators (MSO). The hiring of O'Brien culminates a busy first quarter of activity for Charles' CATV group, which also saw the general release of product to the market on February 1st and the naming of five CATV manufacturers' representative firms and two authorized distributors.

Charles, which acquired the Corning Cable Systems molded pedestal and housing product line of Louvered and Non-Louvered CATV Enclosures in October of 2008, moved production to its Missouri-based manufacturing facility and began shipping product in February of 2009. The formation of a national sales team, led by O'Brien, has allowed Charles to quickly bring product to market and begin supporting deployment initiatives of former Corning CATV pedestal and housing customers.

O'Brien joins Charles with over ten years of experience in the cable television industry working for such companies as ARNCO Corporation and A-D Technologies. He has held executive sales management positions and worked with such providers as Comcast, Time Warner, Charter Communications, and others to help set their strategies for building and upgrading their outside plant network infrastructure. O'Brien earned his Bachelor of Science, Business Management degree from Xavier University and resides in Avon Lake, Ohio.

Charles Industries has also reached agreements with five manufacturers' representative firms to market and support Charles' CATV product portfolio throughout North America. MicroSat, Inc. of Marietta, GA; Communications Supply Group of Shakopee, MN; dB Communications of Collegeville, PA; ComTechnology Sales Corporation of Dallas, TX; and JFC Solutions of Burnaby, British Columbia (Canada) will provide CATV customer/partners with their expertise in network planning, customer service, and pre- and post-sale support in representing Charles' outside plant solutions. In addition, Charles has named Power & Telephone Supply Company (Power & Tel) and TVC Communications as authorized distributors of its CATV product line.

Charles offers three series of non-metallic CATV Enclosures, including above-grade non-louvered vertical pedestals (NLVP), louvered vertical pedestals (LVP) and louvered low-profile housings (LLPH). These versatile outside plant enclosures are designed to protect taps, splitters, line extenders, amplifiers and other coaxial and fiber optic equipment in all types of environmental conditions. More information about Charles CATV Enclosures can be found on the company's website at www.charlesindustries.com/main/catv.html.

ADRENALINE xDSL LINE CONDITIONERS RECEIVE RDUP LISTING; JOIN OTHER CHARLES EXTENDED-REACH DSL AND FTTX SOLUTIONS IN SUPPORTING BROADBAND STIMULUS PLAN INITIATIVES

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL (March 17, 2009) — Charles Industries, Ltd., a leading provider of outside plant innovations for communications service providers, has received notification from the United States Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development / Utilities Services (USDA RDUP, formerly RUS) that its AdrenaLine xDSL Line Conditioners have been formally granted RDUP Listing.  As a listed RDUP product, AdrenaLine xDSL Line Conditioners may now be financed within service providers’ RDUP funded projects, including projects initiated under the broadband stimulus portion of the recently passed American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

AdrenaLine, a hardened outside plant device that can be placed midspan on copper pairs to dramatically increase the rate or reach of ADSL, RE-ADSL or ADSL2+, is one of three DSL extension products manufactured by Charles that qualify for RDUP funding. Other solutions include the Smart Coil, a line conditioning device that provides the voice-improvement benefits of a common load coil while passing DSL, and the High Speed Voice and Data Link (HVDL) system, a TCPAM-based system for providing broadband to rural customers up to 112 Kft. from a central office.

“Charles strongly supports service providers’ FTTX and DSL initiatives,” said Jack Wood, Vice President of Sales for Charles Industries. “We take a hands-on approach to listening to our customers’ deployment challenges and creating solutions that help them reach their unserved and underserved markets.  Our DSL extension products and buried fiber distribution enclosures are the direct result of working with customers to meet real-world service opportunities quickly and cost-efficiently.”

Under the recent American Recovery and Reinvestment Act passed by Congress, $7.2 billion in funds will be made available to service providers for the deployment and construction of broadband systems.  $2.5 billion of the stimulus plan will be administered directly by the RDUP, which will award the money in the form of low-interest loans, loan guarantees and grants.  The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) will administer allocation of the remaining $4.7 billion in grants through its Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP).

One requirement of the broadband stimulus package is that equipment purchased using funding from the program must be assembled in the United States. Charles, which operates four U.S.-based ISO 9001 / TL 9000 certified manufacturing facilities, meets this requirement on all of its RDUP listed products.

Service providers, contractors and engineering firms are encouraged to view the entire list of Charles’ RDUP listed fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) and fiber-to-the-curb (FTTC) enclosures, housings and pedestals; as well as the company’s AdrenaLine, Smart Coil and HVDL DSL extension solutions; on the company’s website at: http://www.charlesindustries.com/main/telecom.html.

CHARLES INDUSTRIES ACQUIRES CORNING CABLE SYSTEMS' MOLDED PEDESTAL AND HOUSING PRODUCT LINE FOR cATV AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS APPLICATIONS

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL (Oct 21, 2008) — Charles Industries, Ltd. announced today that it has reached an agreement with Corning Cable Systems LLC, a leading provider of fiber optic cable and hardware solutions, to acquire the company’s molded pedestal product line for CATV and telecommunications applications.

As a leading provider of fiber, copper and hybrid fiber-coaxial outside plant (OSP) enclosures to the telecommunications industry, Charles’ acquisition of Corning’s non-metallic pedestal line will allow Charles to broaden its product offerings to the cable and telecommunications industries. Charles will capitalize on its 40 years of product development, design, manufacturing and sales experience of OSP, network and local loop electronics to further expand the Corning pedestal product line.

“The acquisition of Corning’s proven and established pedestal product line enables Charles to continue to offer telecommunication service providers, cable companies and multiple service operators a line of products that they have approved, deployed and trusted in their networks,” said Jack Wood, Charles Vice President of Sales. “Leveraging our expertise with environmental enclosures, active and passive optical fiber and thermal management, Charles is uniquely qualified to now support cable operators’ traditional coax, fiber to the home and RF over glass initiatives as they seek to extend their fiber networks closer to the subscriber.”

The newly acquired product line features above-grade non-louvered vertical pedestals, louvered vertical pedestals and louvered low-profile pedestals for CATV, broadband and telecommunications applications. In addition, these products provide a wide variety of mounting options and security for taps, splitters, amplifiers, line extenders and nodes. Several locking options are available to address specific security needs.

“We are pleased that Charles Industries, Ltd. will be offering continued support to our valued pedestal customers,” said Mickey Smith, Director of Sales for Corning Cable Systems. “This agreement will benefit service providers, cable companies and multiple service operators because Corning and Charles share the same philosophy of superior customer service.”

Corning Cable Systems will continue to support fiber management hardware such as the OptiSheath® MultiPort Terminal for use in molded or extruded pedestals.

In the 1970s, Charles was the first manufacturer to introduce non-metallic buried distribution pedestals to the telecommunications industry. Today, Charles pedestals and housings offer superior environmental and flood protection with the advantages of low-maintenance and re-enterable, above-grade access. 2008 marks the third consecutive year that Charles Industries has been named one of the top 100 fiber companies by Broadband Properties Magazine. The annual list highlights those companies that are making a difference in fiber deployment and new technologies.

Charles’ newly acquired pedestal products will be introduced to the public at the 2008 OSP EXPO, to be held October 22-23 in Baltimore, Maryland, Charles exhibit #813.

CHARLES INDUSTRIES INTRODUCES NEW FIBER FLEXIBILITY PEDESTALS FOR CENTRALIZED SPLIT POINTS

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL (Oct 1, 2008) — Charles Industries, Ltd., a leading provider of network edge innovations for telecommunications providers, has introduced a new addition to its industry-leading fiber optic pedestal line with the Charles Fiber Flexibility Pedestal (CFFP).  The CFFP protects centralized split points in an above-grade, environmentally protected fiber pedestal within passive optical networks.

The CFFP is designed to provide a more cost-effective option to fiber distribution hubs with greater flexibility in placement. Fiber Distribution Hubs (FDH), sometimes referred to as local convergence points (LCP), are typically large metallic cabinets that require concrete pads or buried vaults for placement. In contrast, the base of the above-grade CFFP can be directly buried, while the pedestal dome can be removed for convenient access to the splicing area. Its compact size makes it a better choice for small neighborhoods, trailer parks, and remote locations compared to larger sized cabinets. The CFFP is floodproof and can be placed in flood prone areas unlike vented FDHs.

CFFP are offered in three sizes, for distributing up to 96, 144 and 288 fibers respectively. Each pedestal features a specially designed pre-stubbed bulkhead panel and slots for housing 1x32 splitter modules. Technicians can quickly and easily turn up service to subscribers by removing a distribution pigtail from a designated storage “parking lot” and plugging it into the bulkhead panel’s connector interfaces. Bend control cable guides keep the pigtails neatly and securely arranged. An inner dome slides over the entire bulkhead panel area, creating a sealed chamber for added environmental protection.

The CFFP will be introduced to the public in Charles Industries’ exhibit (booth number #813) at the 2008 OSP EXPO to be held Oct. 22-23 in Baltimore.

CHARLES INDUSTRIES NAMED TO BROADBAND PROPERTIES MAGAZINE'S TOP 100 FIBER COMPANIES FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL (August 19, 2008) – Charles Industries, Ltd., a leading provider of network edge innovations for telecommunications providers, has been named a Top 100 Company in Broadband Properties Magazine’s annual list of fiber network vendors.  The list recognizes those organizations that are advancing the cause of Fiber-to-the-Premise (FTTP) in the United States. 2008 marks the third consecutive year Charles Industries has been named to Broadband Properties’ Top 100.

Broadband Properties compiles its annual list of the Top 100 by an editorial panel that reviews over 600 vendors for their contributions to helping service providers deploy fiber networks.  Vendors include hardware manufacturers of inside and outside plant equipment, developers of PON technologies, and developers of network monitoring, provisioning and customer service software. Charles Industries has been selected to the list in 2006, 2007 and 2008 for its contributions in developing innovative outside plant enclosures for fiber splice points, including Charles Fiber Distribution Points (CFDP Pedestals), Buried Distribution Optical Pedestals (BDO Pedestals), Charles Fiber Flexibility Pedestals (CFFP) and Charles Multipurpose Housings (CMPH).

Charles Industries has provided the telecommunications and utilities markets with non-metallic fiber optic distribution pedestals since 2001. Product lines include buried distribution pedestal solutions for every fiber type (ribbon, loose buffer tube or central core tube) and distribution method (mechanical splice, fusion splice, or pre-connectorized).

“Split risers are a real convenience to service technicians,” explains Minesh Patel, vice president of Charles’ OSP Business Unit.  “Technicians can install split risers during new installations, or over existing fiber drops disrupting the fiber sheath or disconnecting them from the ONT.  The small diameter of the split risers provides more secure protection with less material, keeping cost downs.  Split risers are a very sensible, low cost investment to protect against the hundreds of dollars it costs to repair damaged or cut fiber drops.”

“We are very pleased to be named to the Broadband Properties Top 100,” said Jack Wood, vice president of sales for Charles Industries.  “It is an honor to have such a well-respected industry resource acknowledge our company’s contributions to fiber advancement, and serves as proof of our commitment to helping service providers achieve their immediate and future fiber deployment initiatives.”

CHARLES INDUSTRIES PROTECTS FIBER-TO-THE-PREMISES
INSTALLATIONS WITH NEW SPLIT RISER PIPES

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL (May 9, 2008) – Charles Industries, Ltd., a leading provider of network edge innovations for telecommunications providers, has introduced a new addition to its family of cable-protecting riser pipes and wire guards: split risers for fiber optic cables. Split risers allow service technicians to protect the fiber optic drop cables that are placed to optical network terminals (ONT) mounted on the exterior walls of homes, office buildings, retail stores and other buildings being serviced with Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP).

Charles has provided the telecommunications, utility, and cable TV industries with non-metallic riser pipes for more than 38 years. Riser pipes are used to shield the segment of copper and fiber optic cables from where it rises from the ground to where it is connected to a remote terminal mounted on a wall.  By sheathing this section of cable in a riser pipe, service to the end customer is protected from cable damage that could result from vandalism, lawn mowers, string trimmers and other potential hazards. Service calls resulting from cut or damaged cables are reduced. Riser pipes also create an aesthetically pleasing finished look to the cable drop installation.

Split risers are a new twist on the time-proven protection of riser guards.  Split risers feature a small 3/16” slit opening along the entire length of the riser pipe.  This allows the riser pipe to be spread apart wide enough for a fiber optic cable to be inserted into it, instead of having to run the cable through the pipe from bottom to top.  This feature was designed to accommodate pre-connectorized fiber optic cable drops that have large connectors on their ends.  Pre-connectorized drops were impossible to route through traditional small diameter riser pipes (1” diameter or less).  With split risers, fiber optic cables can be easily inserted into the protective riser, then mounted to the premises wall with the split opening facing the wall, thereby providing unbroken protection of the fiber drop. A clamp is provided with each split riser to secure it to the premises wall.

Split risers are available in 5’ lengths with a choice of straight or offset ends.  They are constructed out of lightweight, UV-stabilized PVC that will not rust, dent or corrode. More information about split risers and other Charles OSP solutions can be found at http://www.charlesindustries.com/main/te_riser_pipe.html.

Charles Industries’ CMPH OSP Multi-purpose housings gRANTED rdup lISTING

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL (April 24, 2008) – Charles Industries, Ltd., a leading provider of network edge innovations for telecommunications providers, today announced that its family of Charles Multi-Purpose Housings (CMPH) for fiber optic and copper applications has been granted product acceptance by the Rural Development Utilities Program (RDUP), a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  RDUP listing allows rural telecommunications service providers to purchase and install this equipment using RDUP loans and grants.

CMPH are versatile outside plant enclosures designed for both new provisioning installations (greenfield applications) as well as rehabilitation of existing access points housed in metallic enclosures (brownfield applications). The CMPH’s superior structural strength, outstanding environmental protection and ease of installation combine to create a long-life, non-metallic housing that reduces operational expenses. CMPH are available in a copper and fiber optic configurations. The copper version has internal ladder bars and grounding hardware designed for large pair count copper splices.  The fiber optic version has offset mounting brackets designed for mounting sealed fiber optic closures and slack cable.

“RDUP listing of our CMPH housings is a tremendous asset for our customers,” said Minesh Patel, vice president of Charles’ Outside Plant Business Unit.  “Rural service providers want to provide their customers with the most reliable service possible, and are embarking on DSL and FTTx initiatives to do so.  The CMPH provides them with an RDUP-listed splicing and slack storage solution that will aid them in their high-speed Internet and triple play deployments.”

The Rural Development Utilities Program (formerly the Rural Utilities Service) has promoted universal service throughout America for more than 50 years and continues to provide many programs for financing rural America's telecommunications infrastructure. Rural providers that receive RDUP funds are encouraged to use RDUP equipment, and contractors use the list as a reference for reliable, field-proven technologies. The full list of RDUP accepted materials can be found on the USDA’s website at www.usda.gov/rus/telecom/index.htm.

“We developed our CMPH series after listening to the concerns of rural service providers.  Many of their ideas for a convenient rehabilitation solution for metal cabinets were incorporated into our design,” said Jack Wood, vice president of sales Charles’ Telecommunications Group.  “We’re pleased that RDUP has recognized the standards-based protection our multi-purpose housings provide and has chosen to include them in their accepted materials list, making them available to our rural provider customers that utilize RDUP programs.”

Charles Industries Introduces Fiber Interconnect Pedestals for Multi-Tenant Applications

ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. (May 16, 2007) -  Charles Industries today announced the expansion of its Charles Fiber Distribution Point (CFDP) family of environmental enclosures with the addition of a new line of Fiber Interconnect Pedestals.  The new buried distribution pedestals are designed to provide pre-connectorized interconnect fiber drops to a variety of multi-tenant sites such as cellular towers, campus environments and strip malls.

CFDP Interconnect Pedestals serve as environmentally protected fiber distribution points for wireless backhaul, private network, and broadband service applications.  Each pedestal houses fiber splice trays and a bulkhead with 18 or 24 SC/UPC or SC/APC adapters for simplified fiber provisioning.  Technicians have above-grade access to the full splicing and distribution work area, allowing them to turn-up, move or disconnect services to wireless customers on an “as needed” basis.  This gives service providers added flexibility in their efforts to meet their customers’ bandwidth requirements as they fluctuate due to seasonality or major events.

"With many of our customers involved in wireless backhaul and other high-capacity fiber projects, we were asked to draw on our 30 years of pedestal design experience and create a specialized fiber distribution pedestal for these applications,” explains Dick Hood, Vice President of Charles’ Outside Plant Business Unit.  “CFDP Interconnect Pedestals allow service providers to quickly and easily distribute T1, Ethernet and other high bandwidth services in a wide range of environments at a fraction of the cost of placing a light guide cross-connect (LGX).”
Charles has introduced two sizes of CFDP Interconnect pedestals: the 10” diameter CFDP-EL18 with an eighteen-count SC/UPC or SC/APC adapter bulkhead and the 12” diameter CFDP-EL24 with a twenty four-count SC/UPC or SC/APC adapter bulkhead.  Both versions may be ordered with optional kits that provide 900 micron, color-coded SC/UPC or SC/APC pigtails on the distribution side of the splicing backboard.

All CFDP pedestals offer two-stage environmental protection of fiber distribution points. This two-stage patent-pending protection is accomplished by housing a weather-tight interior enclosure within the confines of a non-metallic buried distribution pedestal. Together, this “enclosure within an enclosure” combination is designed to exceed Telcordia GR-771-CORE specifications and provide an unbeatable line of defense against the elements, including floods, fire, dirt, debris, insects, and corrosion.

Charles INDUSTRIES TEAMS WITH PHYLOGY TO ADAPT NEW DSL TECHNOLOGY FOR RAPID VIDEO DEPLOYMENT OVER COPPER

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL (NOVEMBER 15, 2005) – Charles Industries, Ltd.®, a diversified manufacturer and high-technology company, today announced that it has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Silicon Valley–based Phylogy, Inc., inventors of the revolutionary TripleStream Line Conditioner.  Under terms of the agreement, Charles will adapt TripleStream technology into a hardened environmental enclosure, to be released under the brand name AdrenaLine xDSL Conditioner.

As a leading provider of field-proven environmental enclosures for telecommunications networks, Charles Industries is uniquely qualified to ensure the successful integration of TripleStream technology into a multi-line environmental enclosure that can be deployed in aerial, above-grade, below-grade and buried applications.  The AdrenaLine xDSL Conditioner will feature a temperature-hardened, non-metallic enclosure with a cable stub designed for splicing into existing copper twisted pair cable.

“We are convinced Charles is the right strategic partner to introduce TripleStream technology to the North American telecom market,” said Tim Mueller, President of Phylogy, Inc.  “Charles is a well respected name in the industry; and their design, manufacturing, sales channel, and technical support expertise will undoubtedly prove critical to the successful launch of a product both our companies believe will revolutionize Fiber-to-the-Node deployments.”

Charles’ AdrenaLine xDSL Conditioners will allow service providers to dramatically improve the rate and reach of “Triple Play” DSL services (video, voice and data) over existing copper pairs.  Whereas traditional DSL service has a physical reach limitation of approximately 6kft or less for viable Triple Play service deployment (10Mbps rate), the AdrenaLine xDSL Conditioner will expand the DSL serving area to 12kft and beyond, allowing providers to reach markets that are unserved and underserved today.

In addition to rate and reach benefits, the AdrenaLine xDSL Conditioner will deliver significant cost, labor and time-to-market savings to service providers.  Deployment of the AdrenaLine product requires no changes at the central switching office, no equipment at the subscriber premises, and no local power supply.  A field technician can quickly install the product into existing network lines using techniques familiar to installing a load coil case.  By minimizing the need for fiber optic cable trenching and node placements, the AdrenaLine xDSL Conditioner complements Fiber-to-the-Node (FTTN) network architectures by further reducing labor and material expenses.  Telco service providers benefit from a product that speeds time-to-market service availability, especially in their desire to compete against Cable TV providers for video and broadband Internet subscribers.

Charles is targeting general product availability of the ADSL and ADSL2+ AdrenaLine xDSL Conditioners in Spring 2006.  A VDSL2 version is targeted for Summer 2006.

Charles INDUSTRIES’ announces HVDL (hIGH-SPEED VOICE AND DATA LINK) product line Enhancements

Service Providers Can Now Use HVDL to Provide Broadband
Services to their Most Remote Subscribers

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL, October 31, 2005 – Charles Industries Ltd., a privately held, diversified manufacturing and high-technology company, announced today its High Speed Voice and Data Link (HVDL) DSL solution will now permit telephone companies to provide service to even their most remote customers as a result of two significant enhancements, a local power remote terminal and a low-profile shelf for remote deployments of HVDL systems.

A new remote terminal (RT) has been created that is locally powered and provides one voice and one data line. The local power RT is deployed in an outdoor NID assembly and allows service to be provided over the longest copper loops.  The new HVDL RT allows the deployment of up to five repeaters, which will support configurations in excess of 112Kft.

Many telephone companies have found that they need to provide high-speed data and voice services to a few customers from limited space in existing remote cabinets.  In order to address this application, Charles has created a one-rack unit (1RU), or “pizza box” solution that can be deployed in outdoor cabinets.  The HVDL pizza box is a 19” wide, 1RU high shelf that will provide up to 3 HVDL lines, which may also reach in excess of 112Kft beyond the outdoor cabinet.  All existing HVDL repeaters, and RTs are fully compatible with the 1RU solution.

“More than 200 independent telephone companies have deployed HVDL to provide extended reach DSL service,” said John Eberhart, Vice President of Sales at Charles.   “In response to customer demand, we’ve added this local power RT so that high-speed data and voice can be provided to the furthest subscriber.  We’ve also created a 1RU solution so that HVDL can be served out of remote cabinets that are widely deployed.  HVDL can truly reach the most remote telco customer,” Eberhart said.

These new enhancements to the HVDL platform have immediate applications in rural deployments by Independent Operating Companies (IOC) looking for a cost-effective method of delivering high-speed Internet service to their most remote subscribers.  HVDL can be turned up one customer at a time, minimizing the IOC’s initial hardware investment. IOC are thus able to quickly offer broadband service to their entire subscription area, even in low-density population areas that once were seen as cost prohibitive to DSL deployment.

Charles’ HVDL system was first introduced in 2000.  The system was recognized by the telecommunications industry for its ability to use an existing twisted copper pair to deliver three voice lines and a 1.04 Mbps symmetrical data line to business, SOHO and residential markets.  In October of 2001, HVDL was awarded the prestigious 2001 InfoVision Award for its technological contribution to broadband deployment.

Charles Industries’ FIBER DISTRIBUTION PEDESTALS
FIRST TO BE GRANTED RDUP LISTING

Rural Utilities Service Acceptance of Charles Fiber Distribution Pedestals Will Aid Rural Phone Companies’ FTTP Initiatives

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL (August 25, 2005) – Charles Industries, Ltd., a leading provider of network edge innovations for telecommunications providers, today announced that its Charles Fiber Distribution Point (CFDP) and Buried Distribution Optical (BDO) series of fiber optic pedestal enclosures have been granted product acceptance by the Rural Development Utilities Program (RDUP), a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  RDUP acceptance allows rural telecommunication service providers to purchase and install this equipment using RUS loans and grants.

CFDP and BDO Series Buried Distribution Pedestals are the first pedestal-type fiber splice housings to be listed in the USDA’s “List of Materials Acceptable for Use on Telecommunications Systems of RDUP Borrowers.”  Charles’ fiber distribution pedestals offer weather-tight environmental protection of fiber optic loop distribution cable and customer service drops in fiber-to-the-premises deployments.  Service providers use these pedestal housings to protect and provide access to fiber splice points, those places in the network where individual fibers are separated from larger bundles and routed to specific homes and offices.

“RDUP acceptance of our CFDP and BDO pedestal series is a tremendous asset for our customers,” said Dick Hood, director of Charles’ Outside Plant Products Business Unit.  “Rural service providers want to provide their customers with the best service possible, and are embarking on FTTP initiatives to do so.  Having an RDUP listed distribution pedestal at their disposal helps them to achieve their fiber deployment plans.”

The Rural Development Utilities Program has promoted universal service throughout America for more than 50 years and continues to provide many programs for financing rural America's telecommunications infrastructure. Rural providers that receive RDUP funds are encouraged to use RDUP equipment, and contractors use the list as a reference for reliable, field-proven technologies.

RDUP listed five sizes of CFDP and BDO pedestals in its Buried Plant Housings category, including 6”, 8”, 10”, 12” and 14” diameters.  The full list of RDUP accepted materials can be found on the USDA’s website at www.usda.gov/rus/telecom/index.htm.

“We developed our CFDP and BDO fiber pedestal series after listening to the concerns of rural service providers.  Many of their ideas for functional fiber splice protection were worked into the design,” said Al McGovern, director of engineering for Charles’ outside plant products.  “We’re pleased that RDUP has recognized the standards-based protection our fiber pedestals provide and chosen to include them in their accepted materials list, making them available to our rural provider customers that utilize RUS programs.”

CHARLES INDUSTRIES PEDLOCK BDO SERIES FIBER OPTIC DISTRIBUTION PEDESTALS AID FIBER-TO-THE-PREMISES DEPLOYMENTS

ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. (December 9, 2004) - With fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) initiatives topping many telephone companies' "To Do" lists, finding enclosure solutions for the protection of fiber splice points has become a top priority for architects of today's high-speed voice and data networks. Charles Industries has responded to these service providers' plea for help by developing the Pedlock BDO Series of Fiber Distribution Pedestals, the first non-metallic buried distribution pedestal to be designed from the "ground up" specifically to protect fiber branch and drop splices.

Pedlock BDO Series Fiber Pedestals from Charles Industries have been designed to provide outstanding environmental protection of fiber optic splice and storage points.  In both greenfield and brownfield fiber deployments, BDO Series Fiber Pedestals offer easy access to branch and drop splices while protecting and storing loose buffer tube fiber optic cables. A specially designed splice bracket allows technicians to mount splice trays and splitters securely with ample access to perform in-field splicing.

"We were hearing from our customers-both big and small operating companies-that the need existed for a buried distribution pedestal capable of protecting diverse splicing and splitting hardware from various manufacturers," said Dick Hood, Director of Charles Industries Outside Plant Business Unit.  "We knew there was not yet a product on the market that met all of our customers' requirements, so we exceeded our customers' expectations by engineering and manufacturing a completely new line of fiber distribution pedestals."

Engineers at Charles Industries began by taking the best attributes of their Pedlock Copper Buried Distribution Pedestals, a product that has proven itself in telephone networks for more than 30 years, and applying those attributes to its new fiber pedestals.  Non-metallic construction makes BDO Fiber Pedestals lighter, stronger, safer to work with and more resistant to corrosion, chemicals, and impact than metallic enclosures.  A lift-off dome provides 360-degree access to internal working areas and provides flood protection through its "Bell-Jar" effect design.  An expanded-capacity split base is designed to easily install around conduit-fed cable bundles in new construction.  BDO pedestals are an ideal solution for both rehabilitation of metallic enclosures and protection of co-located copper/fiber distribution points.

Charles engineers developed two new splice bracket options to provide users with a choice between fiber-only splicing and copper/fiber co-location splicing.  On both brackets, a splice tray "holster" accommodates all commonly used fiber splice trays with a 5" x 12" or smaller footprint.

Since their November 2004 introduction, Pedlock BDO Series Pedestals have garnered much attention from telephone company network planners as well as independent contractors.  According to Mr. Hood, several Incumbent Local Exchage Carriers (ILEC) have made Charles Industries their supplier of choice for fiber distribution pedestals.  "The response to the Pedlock BDO Series has been phenomenal," Hood reports.  "FTTP is on everyone's lips; and a cost-effective, well-designed solution that helps speed deployment quickly gets people attention."

Charles INDUSTRIES’ hIGH-SPEED VOICE AND DATA LINK (HVDL) Adds another 30,000 feet for DSL customers

Service Providers Can Now Use HVDL To Provide Broadband Services To Their Most Remote Subscribers

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL, August 4, 2004 – Charles Industries Ltd., a privately held, diversified manufacturing and high-technology company, announced today the release of an enhancement to its High Speed Voice and Data Link (HVDL 3.1) DSL solution that expands the system’s capability to deliver broadband service to 85Kft and beyond.

A new local power remote terminal has been added to HVDL to expand the system’s far-reaching capabilities.  The local power remote terminal can be deployed inside the customer premise, thus overcoming previous limitations associated with delivering line power to remotes on the end of long loops.

In preliminary customer trials, the new device facilitated DSL connections at distances in excess of 85Kft from the central office.  Lab tests indicate the product will support configurations well in excess of 100Kft, enabling telephone companies to provide service to every subscriber regardless of proximity to the central office.

“Over 150 independent telephone companies have deployed HVDL 3.1 in the last three years to provide extended reach service”, said Tony Wilson, Vice President of Sales at Charles.   “We had already enabled several customers to receive DSL service at distances beyond 60Kft with our standard solution configuration.  However, there were still some customers we simply couldn’t reach.  Our engineers met the challenge and delivered a solution for the most remote subscribers.  To date, we have not found a customer that could not be served with the local power RT solution”.

The new local power remote terminal has immediate applications in rural deployments by Independent Operating Companies looking for a cost-effective method of delivering high-speed Internet service to their most remote subscribers.  HVDL can be turned up one customer at a time, minimizing the IOC’s initial hardware investment. This feature makes it possible for IOCs to quickly offer broadband service to their entire subscription area, even in low-density population areas that once were seen as cost prohibitive to DSL deployment.

Charles’ HVDL 3.1 system was first introduced in 2000.  The system broke new ground in the telecommunications industry for its ability to use an existing twisted copper pair to deliver three voice lines and a 1.04 Mbps symmetrical data line to business, SOHO and residential markets.  The original system featured repeatable transmission to extend DSL reach up to 56,000 feet.  In October of 2001, HVDL was awarded the prestigious 2001 InfoVision Award for its technological contribution to broadband deployment.
