CHARLES INDUSTRIES INTRODUCES NEW BATTERY COMBINER
BattCom Automates Charging and Eliminates the Need for Battery Isolators

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL. (October 1, 2008) – Charles Marine & Industrial Group today announced the introduction of their new BattComTM, a 12 volt waterproof battery combiner with 280 amp capacity.  “BattCom eliminates the need for battery isolators and battery switches and provides a heavier current capacity than any other battery combiner on the market,” states Lyle St. Romain, General Manager.  Designed for boats ranging in size from 15 – 29’, the microprocessor controlled BattCom automatically detects charging power from an alternator or battery charger and combines the main and reserve batteries for charging.  Upon stopping the engine or removing the battery charger, BattCom will disconnect, allowing both batteries to provide power independently of each other.

BattCom is encased in a high quality ABS plastic sealed case (4” x 3” x 2.5”) with stainless steel connection terminals and insulated rubber caps for safe operation.  The unit can be mounted in a convenient location close to the batteries and is extremely easy to install with a two-wire connection.  The unit is waterproof, maintenance free and designed to last the life of a boat.  List Price is $128.34.  An Optional dashboard remote indicator is available.

The company will introduce BattCom at the 2008 IBEX (International Boatbuilders’ Exhibition and Conference) October 6-8, 2008 at Booth #1655.

CHARLES MARINE INTRODUCES NEW AC POWER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM - PM3-100 Provides Large Yachts With 200 Amp Service

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL. (July 1, 2008) – The list of standard equipment on board a new yacht is almost endless.  Audio/visual, lighting, water heaters and a myriad of appliances are taxing on the average onboard electrical infrastructure.  Charles Marine has solved this critical challenge with the introduction of their new PM3-100 AC Power Management System.  “Viking Yachts came to us with a request to develop a flexible onboard power management system that delivers the necessary 200 amp service that is becoming more commonplace on today’s large yachts,” states Lyle St. Romain, Managing Director of Charles Marine & Industrial Group.  “Our engineers created an intelligent system that isolates and regulates dockside power to protect on-board systems from voltage drops, spikes and surges that are typically associated with the inconsistency of shore-side power,” adds St. Romain.  Based on successful sales of the company’s PM3, a smaller 100 amp system, Charles expects similar results for the new PM3-100.

Developed for the 55’ plus yacht market, the system provides boat builders with greater freedom in managing onboard loads up to a maximum of 200 amps (while connecting to two 240 volt 100 amp shore power pedestals).  Its unique, three-piece modular design enables the builder to distribute its weight and size as required onboard the vessel.  Yacht owners gain the ability to operate the maximum rated amount of AC electrical equipment without the worry of exceeding load capacity.  Provided shore-power is available, the PM3-100 will supply a minimum of 100 amps, maximum of 200 amps to the vessel’s main distribution point.

Built into the PM3-100 are (2) 12KVA voltage boosting isolation transformers and microprocessor-controlled electronics that check for shore-side anomalies such as incorrect phasing, low/high voltage, loss of shore-side input as well as prevent against galvanic corrosion.  The unit includes a pre-wired remote panel with a 20-character VFD display for remote monitoring and keypad/display on the main control unit that is ideal for in-field diagnostics as well as providing users with the ability to monitor the current onboard power processes at all times.

CHARLCHARLES MARINE INTRODUCES NEW ISOLATION TRANSFORMER - IsoBoost SST Offers Built-In SoftStart Technology and Voltage Boosting Performance

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL. (June 10, 2008) – As the demand for onboard electronics and amenities continue to climb, the need for more power and enhanced onboard power management systems has increased dramatically.   Charles Marine & Industrial Group, US manufacturer of high quality AC and DC electrical products, today announced the introduction of their new 50 and 100amp IsoBoost models with SoftStartTM.  The new isolation transformer with voltage boosting performance offers the reliability and assurance that adequate voltage is supplied to all of the onboard AC equipment, regardless of the quality of fluctuating dockside power.  The new IsoBoost SST detects 50 Hz (International) or 60 Hz (North America) electrical systems and automatically adjusts its output voltage and boost threshold to provide optimal voltage for the vessel.  In the event AC dockside power drops below a preset threshold, the IsoBoost SST boosts AC dockside voltage 15%.  Engineered with SoftStartTM technology (SST), the new IsoBoost SST also limits the in-rush power, eliminating nuisance tripping of dockside circuit breakers.  This feature is extremely important to the International market and parts of North America where circuit breakers on shore power pedestals are notoriously sensitive.

Charles Marine manufacturers 90% of marine boosting isolation transformers worldwide.  The introduction of the new IsoBoost SST is a significant addition to the company’s current offering of high performance isolation transformers.  “Feedback from OEMs was a critical factor in the development of the new SoftStart Technology,” states Lyle St. Romain, Managing Director of Charles Marine & Industrial Group.  “We’re pleased to offer customers an upgraded isolation transformer with superior performance and technology,” adds St. Romain.  Charles isolation transformers are the only transformers designed specifically for the marine industry that are Marine UL Listed, meet all ABYC & NMMA standards as well as CE standards for European use.  Constructed with a full current carrying shield, Charles isolation transformers allow the boat’s electrical system to be completely isolated from shore, diminishing the potential for in-water shock hazards and eliminating the need for galvanic isolators and polarity alarms.

Charles Marine Introduces upgraded Marine Isolation Transformer - New ISO-G2 Delivers Safety and Reliability in a Compact Package

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL. (March 21, 2006) – Once considered a viable solution primarily for large yachts, isolation transformers have made their way onto equipment lists of boaters who demand safe and clean power onboard smaller vessels.   Isolation transformers not only prevent galvanic corrosion but also protect onboard electrical systems and electronics from potential shore side hazards including reverse polarity, “lost neutrals” on 120/240 systems, voltage transients, spikes and noise.

The introduction of Charles Marine’s new ISO-G2 is a significant addition to the company’s current offering of high performance isolation transformers.   Several enhancements to the ISO-G2 include a lightweight design (60 pounds) and easy-to-install terminal blocks with wiring options to accommodate both horizontal and vertical installation.  The new 30 amp

ISO-G2 Isolation Transformer Series is available in both 3.6kVA and 3.8kVA models, providing a simple solution for smaller vessels in North America and overseas.  ISO-G2 will replace the current line of ISO-Guard isolation transformers.

“Customer feedback and continuous improvement are driving forces behind product development at Charles Marine,” states Lyle St. Romain, General Manager of Charles Marine & Industrial Group.  “We’re pleased to offer customers an upgraded isolation transformer with superior performance for the same price,” adds St. Romain.

Charles isolation transformers are the only transformers designed specifically for the marine industry that are Marine UL Listed, meet all ABYC & NMMA standards and have CE certification for European use.
Constructed with a full current carrying shield, Charles isolation transformers allow the boat’s electrical system to be completely isolated from shore, diminishing the potential for in-water shock hazards and eliminating the need for galvanic isolators and polarity alarms.

CHARLES MARINE TO HOST LIFE SAVING SEMINAR AT YACHT RENDEZVOUS - ‘Beating the Odds of Sudden Cardiac Arrest’ Offered At DeFever Winter Rendezvous

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL. (January 24, 2007) – Winter is an ideal time for serious boaters to contemplate and schedule their next cruising voyage.  For DeFever Cruisers, an enthusiastic group of approximately 900 boaters worldwide, this year’s winter rendezvous will be the kick-off for planning spring cruising adventures.  This annual event will be held Friday, January 26th through Monday, January 29th, 2007 at the new Club at Hammock Beach in Palm Coast, Florida.  As part of the seminar series, Charles Marine, the exclusive marine distributor for the Samaritan® AED (automated external defibrillator) will be hosting a seminar  -  Lifesaving Defibrillators-Beating the Odds of Sudden Cardiac Arrest’ during the event.  “After searching out experts on lifesaving equipment for boaters, we approached Charles Marine with the opportunity to present a seminar on the topic of portable defibrillators,” states Hank Haeseker, seminar chair.  “Our members are interested in learning more about how they can keep themselves and their crew safe during a potentially fatal episode of sudden cardiac arrest while under way,” Haesker added.

The American Heart Association (AHA) estimates that between 225,000 - 300,000 people die suddenly each year in the U.S. from coronary heart disease, most before ever reaching a hospital. In general, for every minute that passes between the onset of cardiac arrest and defibrillation the rate of survival decreases by 7 to 10 percent.  Portable defibrillators can be a key factor for increased survival rate of a person experiencing sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).   “Charles Marine strongly suggests the addition of an AED to boat emergency kits,” states Lyle St. Romain, Managing Director of Charles Marine & Industrial Group.  “It makes perfect sense to have a portable defibrillator on-board your vessel where medical attention can often be more difficult to access than on land,” adds St. Romain.  Advocates for safe boating, Charles Marine has hosted lifesaving seminars for various events including TrawlerFest and Key West Race Week.

Designed with everyday people in mind, HeartSine’s new PAD (personal access defibrillator) includes an interface that guides even the most infrequent user through the rescue process. Using audio prompts and three simple illuminated icons, the PAD will clearly guide the rescuer through each step.  The compact water-resistant and shockproof unit weighs less than two pounds and is sold as a complete package including the Samaritan PAD, prep-kit, two Pad-Paks (each including a set of defibrillator pads with a 6-hour battery capable of delivering more than 30 shocks) and a carry case.

For more information on the 2007 DeFever Cruisers Winter Rendezvous and the DFC Group or to sign up for Charles Marine’s Safety Seminar, please contact Steven or Diane Koch at sushstevdi@aol.com or call 941-320-4266.

When asked how the new partnership will affect sales for Charging Systems, Johnny Brannon, President, stated, “We are excited about the opportunity to expand sales of Dual Pro products into the saltwater and larger boat market.”  Brannon adds, “The alliance with Charles Marine will support our company goals of growing market share as well as provide us with an introduction to OEMs and customers Charles has developed solid relationships with”.  With manufacturing facilities of both companies located in the U.S. there is a strong synergy and commitment to product quality and reliability as well as a control over the entire production process – an advantage that translates into significant benefits for customers.

CHARLES MARINE ADDS NEW LIFE SAVING AED TO PRODUCT LINE - Samaritan® PAD is Compact, Easy-to-Use and Saves Lives

CHICAGO, IL. (July 14, 2005) – Portable defibrillators can be a key factor for increased survival rate of a person experiencing sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).  Stories of lives saved by these units have stormed the nation making AEDs a household name.  As the official marine distributor for HeartSine Technologies AEDs, Charles Marine has championed the cure for SCA on the water by offering life saving AEDs to boaters.  “Charles Marine strongly advocates the addition of an AED to  boat emergency kits,” states Lyle St. Romain, General Manager of Charles Marine & Industrial Group.  “It makes perfect sense to have a portable defibrillator on-board your vessel where medical attention can often be more difficult to access than on land,” adds St. Romain.

Charles Marine announced it has added the Samaritan® PAD to its product line. Designed with everyday people in mind, HeartSine’s new PAD (Personal Access Defibrillator) includes an interface that guides even the most infrequent user through the rescue process. Using audio prompts and three simple illuminated icons, the PAD will clearly guide the rescuer through each step.  The compact unit weighs less than two pounds and is sold as a complete package including the Samaritan PAD, prep-kit, two Pad-Paks (each including a set of defibrillator pads with a 6-hour battery capable of delivering more than 30 shocks) and a carry case.  The Samaritan PAD retails for $1,595 and can be purchased at select marine retailers and dealers.

Charles Marine was selected as the official marine distributor for HeartSine Technologies in February 2004.  Together, the companies have actively sponsored industry events such as Nordhavn Atlantic Rally 2004, Key West Race Week 2005, and PassageMaker Magazine’s Trawler Fests 2005 in an effort to educate the boating public about AEDs (automated external defibrillator) and their ability to save people’s lives.  Charles Marine will be introducing the Samaritan PAD at MAATS (Marine Aftermarket Accessories Trade Show) in Las Vegas July 19 – 22, 2005 (Booth #204).

Portable defibrillators can be a key factor for increased survival rate of a person experiencing sudden cardiac arrest whether on land or at sea.

Built on over 30 years of clinical research and bioengineering development by the pioneers of portable defibrillation, HeartSine defibrillators are available in two models, the Samaritan AED (automated external defibrillator) perfect for offshore cruising, and the new Samaritan PAD (personal access defibrillator), a compact unit ideal for coastal cruising.  Lightweight and portable, the units feature clear, concise, easy-to-follow voice and visual prompts that give the first responder (with or without medical training) the ability to save a life.  The Samaritan defibrillators use HeartSine’s SCOPE™ Biphasic technology, a low-energy waveform that adjusts for the differences in each person’s physical make-up, to deliver optimal defibrillation to every patient.

CHARLES MARINE & HEARTSINE TECHNOLOGIES PROVIDE LIFE SAVING DEFIBRILLATORS TO NORDHAVN ATLANTIC RALLY - Samaritan® AED Part of Escort Boats’ Safety Provisions

CHICAGO, IL. (July 1, 2004) – Charles Marine and HeartSine Technologies provided life saving portable defibrillators to the Nordhavn Atlantic Rally 2004 (NAR) which finished successfully in Gibraltar on June 27th.  This invitational event brought 18 long-range trawler yachts together to make the 3,500-mile voyage across the Atlantic Ocean.  To ensure safety of all participants, all three Nordhavns serving as escort vessels were outfitted with HeartSine’s portable Samaritan AEDs (automated external defibrillator).

HeartSine Technologies provided basic life support training including CPR and medical instruction on defibrillator usage to all Nordhavn owners/operators prior to departure from Ft. Lauderdale on May 16th.  Dr. Ware, chief medical director of the Nordhavn Atlantic Rally quoted, “Having the Samaritan AEDs on board the official escort vessels gave us peace of mind that we were prepared for the event of any passenger experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.”  He added, “Having AEDs on board long distance cruising vessels can be as important as carrying life preservers”.  The American Heart Association estimates that between 225,000 - 300,000 people die suddenly each year in the U.S. from coronary heart disease, most before ever reaching a hospital.  In general, for every minute that passes between the onset of cardiac arrest and defibrillation the rate of survival decreases by 7 to 10 percent

Lightweight and portable, the unit weighs a mere 4.2 lbs. with a long lasting battery of 12 hours of monitoring or 120 shocks (at full energy).  Of great importance is the clear and concise operation with easy to follow voice and text prompts as well as a large message display to guide the first responder.  The Samaritan’s Data-Pak™ is a battery and data storage in one product whereby event information is recorded and can be easily downloaded to any standard PC for evaluation by medical personnel.  The Samaritan can immediately return to service and save another life. Each Samaritan AED includes a soft carrying case, 2 sets of pads, a quick reference card and an operators manual for reviewing optimum operation.  The Samaritan AED sells for $2,200 and can be purchased through West Marine.

Based in San Clemente, CA, HeartSine Technologies is a leader in defibrillation technology and products.  Earlier this year, HeartSine chose Charles Marine & Industrial Group, provider of high quality AC and DC electrical products, as the exclusive marine distributor for HeartSine’s new Samaritan AED.  “Together we are committed to offering this new life saving product to boaters and are pleased to sponsor the 2004 Nordhavn Atlantic Rally, a perfect event to promote safety on the water,” said Lyle St. Romain, General Manager of Charles Marine & Industrial Group.  For more information on the Samaritan AED, visit www.charlesindustries.com or call Charles Marine at

U.S. ARMY CHOOSES CHARLES MARINE BATTERY CHARGERS - Customized Battery Chargers Outfit U.S. Army Tanks Overseas

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL. (June 15, 2004) – Charles Industries, Ltd. was awarded a contract from the U.S. Army for three hundred seven (307) customized battery chargers which were recently installed on M-1 Abrams tanks for deployment overseas.  Designed for use in extreme terrain, components of the chargers were upgraded to military specifications and include a preinstalled 15’ heavy-duty 10-gauge cord set.  The recent order from the Department of Defense is in addition to several military contracts for Charles electrical products including  specialty transformers and waterproof battery chargers.

Also involving the Department of Defense, the company supplied transformers to the U.S. Air Force in order to power up secure satcom phone terminals. Units were bundled in protective transit cases to be dropped by parachute into remote areas of Iraq and Afghanistan.  Working in conjunction with Department of Homeland Security, Charles was chosen by the FAA to provide large transformers to be used in powering anti-terrorist “wave off” runway lights at all major U.S. airports to warn aircraft in the event of possible terrorist attacks.

When asked about the growing demand for products manufactured by Charles Industries, the company sited several reasons for the increased business from government and military branches.  “Charles meets many of the required criteria of high quality products for military use,” states Lyle St. Romain, General Manager of Charles Marine & Industrial Group.  “In addition, all Charles products are made in the USA and we are an ISO 9001:2000
certified company with many products meeting the stringent qualifications for Marine UL Listing.  These qualifications are all serious considerations for the U.S. Government when deciding on a contract vendor,” adds St. Romain.

In a strategy to manage and increase the volume of military and government business, Charles Marine & Industrial Group has recently appointed Jim Hughes as an independent Government Programs Representative.  A seasoned veteran of the marine industry, he recently held the position of Global Manager Government/Military Sales for Raymarine, Inc., leading manufacturer of marine electronics.  Hughes is currently working on securing Charles Industries as an official GSA/GSA Advantage vendor to simplify sales of Charles Marine & Industrial products to the Federal Government.  He will be representing the company at the upcoming MACC (Multi-Agency Craft Conference) in Norfolk, Virginia June 15 –17.

Charles Industries Owner Donates Sailboat to Shake-A-Leg Miami - ‘Liberator’ Christened at Grand Opening of Watersports Center

CHICAGO, IL. (May 25, 2004) – Joe Charles, owner of Charles Industries donated a 20’ Catalina Freedom Independence sailboat to Shake-A-Leg Miami (SALM).   A non-profit organization working in partnership with the City of Miami, SALM provides recreational and educational activities for adults and children with disabilities.  The newest member of the SALM fleet, appropriately named ‘Liberator’ was christened on May 1st, 2004 during the grand opening of the organization’s world-class watersports center.  Harry Horgan, founder and executive director of Shake-A-Leg Miami stated, “Our motto has always been ‘launching boats and dreams’.”  Horgan added, “It’s with generous contributions from people like the Charles family that allow us to carry out our mission.”   Liberator is one of nine Freedom Independence sailboats at Shake-A-Leg Miami’s watersports center originally designed and built by Everett Pearson, president of Tillotson Pearson Inc.  Designed to be universally accessible, the unique sailboat has two swivel seats and all lines coming to the cockpit to give wheelchair-bound individuals maximum safety and control.  Liberator will be used as part of the organization’s extensive program offering sailing instruction and sailboat racing.

The roots of Shake-A-Leg Miami go back to 1982, when Shake-A-Leg was founded in Newport, Rhode Island by Harry Horgan.  Paralyzed after an accident in 1980, Horgan discovered during his own rehabilitation that the physically-challenged need a place where they can build confidence and strengthen their bodies following traditional hospital based rehabilitation.  Dr. Barth Green, neurosurgeon and director of the applied research programs of The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis recognized this pioneering work and convinced Shake-A-Leg to expand its operation to Miami where he co-founded Shake-A-Leg Miami in 1990.  Operating in partnership with the City of Miami Parks Department, the organization offers a fully inclusive education and recreation center and the largest adaptive watersports center in the United States.   The facility includes state-of-the-art equipment, experienced staff, multi-disciplined and comprehensive recreation and training programs for people with disabilities and disadvantaged youth in the South Florida area.

Joe Charles stated, “The Charles family is pleased to sponsor the Shake-A-Leg Miami foundation and to support their mission of making dreams come true and enabling people to achieve their goals.”
